of the Conference of Missionary Societies in Great Britain.

Advantage has at once been taken of this decision by the

German Societies. Permission has already been granted by the

Secretary of State for the missionaries of four different

German societies to return to Tanganyika Territory, ▲ year

or two ago missionaries of the Bremen Society were permitted to return to the Gold Coast and Tege. Other applications

have also been granted and several are now being made.

The Government of Hongkong some time ago

intimated that it was net prepared at that time to consent

to the return of German missionaries to Hongkong. In view

of the decision taken by the Secretary of State it may be

presumed that the Goverment of Hongkong will not sustain

this objection, except for reasons of a special kimi. You

will see from the copy of my letter to the Beeretary of State

the proposals which have been put forward by the Conference

of Missionary Societies.

The Conference of Hissionary Becieties is

engaged in preparing a list of German societies which will be

submitted for formal recognition. There is no doubt that the

societies desiring to resume work in Hongkong will be included

in this list.

I am sending you this information since, when the Government has given its decision, the societies to which

permission is granted to return to Hongkong will be making application to the Board of Trustees for the use of their

property:

1

The purpose of Article 438, which was inserted

in the Versailles Treaty as the result of representations

made by us to the Goverment while the Treaty was being

prepared, was to secure that the property of German missions should be withdrawn from the reparations and economic clauses

of the Treaty dealing with German property generally and be

conserved
